Run Your Race Part 1

 Run Your Race 1

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us…

No two passes look the same.  We may leave first in round one, but chase in round two. Our opponent may stage slowly in round three, but immediately round four.  We may get dumped at the finish line round five but give the stripe round six.  The important thing is to run each race as it unfolds before us. Our verse above describes our Christian race as “set before us”.  That indicates three things.

First it is a performed race.  Perform as in something to carry out, accomplish, or fulfill.  Whatever God calls us to do, it will require effort.  As one preacher put it, “there is no such thing as easy Christianity”.  Additionally, it is a race!  That implies competition, something is at stake.  We haven’t discussed it much, but  we have a very real enemy (Satan), and he does not want God’s will to be accomplished. Especially, when God is using us to bring others to Him.

Second, it is a prepared race. Two aspects to consider here and we have looked at both previously.  Aspect 1… we are prepared for the race.  We are the car, God is the Crew Chief and the Holy Spirit is the Driver.  Additionally, the race is prepared for us. The Bible says “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another … (1 Peter 4:10).  We are called to our lane (see previous devotionals).

Thirdly, it is a personal race. It is set before us, not someone else.  What God calls you to do, can only be best done by you.  You are uniquely gifted and qualified to accomplish the task and win the round.

Of importance here is to focus on that round and nothing else.  We are not told to focus on gifts, talents, comfort zones, or abilities.  That is the Crew Chief’s territory.  We are simply to make ourselves available for the run.

More to come
